Bonus guide

How are bonuses taxed in the UK? PAYE, NI and student loans

A cash bonus from employment is normally processed as earnings through payroll. That means it can affect PAYE Income Tax, employee National Insurance and student-loan deductions in the pay period in which it is paid.

A bonus does not have a special flat tax rate

For ordinary cash employment bonuses, the key issue is your total taxable earnings and the PAYE calculation, not a separate “bonus tax”. A bonus can push part of annual income into a higher tax band or into the Personal Allowance taper.

NI can look different in the bonus month

Employee NI is pay-period based. A large monthly bonus may place more of that month’s earnings above the Upper Earnings Limit, where the employee rate is 2% rather than 8%. This is another reason annual calculators and individual payslips can differ slightly.

Student loan deductions

Student and postgraduate loan deductions also use pay-period income thresholds. A bonus can therefore trigger or increase a deduction in that month even if earnings are usually below the threshold.

Using Netly Pay

Enter the expected annual bonus alongside salary to see an annualised estimate. Treat it as planning rather than a promise of the exact bonus-month payslip.

Worked example: a £5,000 bonus

Suppose your normal annual salary is £45,000 and you receive a £5,000 taxable cash bonus. The bonus is added to employment pay rather than placed in a special “bonus tax” band. Part of the extra pay may cross an Income Tax band, while NI and student-loan deductions are assessed using payroll-period rules. The amount that reaches your bank can therefore be materially less than £5,000.

Why the bonus-month payslip can look harsh

PAYE uses your tax code and payroll basis, while NI and student-loan deductions use pay-period thresholds. A one-off spike in pay can make that month's deductions look very different from an ordinary month. Your final Income Tax position across the year may also depend on the tax code and cumulative PAYE basis used by your employer.

Bonus sacrifice and pensions

Some employers allow a bonus to be exchanged for an employer pension contribution under a salary-sacrifice arrangement. The rules and deadlines are scheme-specific and the arrangement normally needs to be agreed before entitlement to the cash payment is fixed. Check with payroll or your pension provider rather than assuming a bonus can be redirected after it is paid.
